Dashain and Tihar are the major festivals of Nepalese people. These festivals normally fall on October and November. All the schools are close during this festival. Likewise, my school is also shut for a month and we all go on Vacation.
Unlike others i have many plans for my upcoming vacation. I will be seeing my family and friends from village during vacation. Dashain starts just after the day of our holiday. It is a time when people decorate their houses, wear new clothes and meet their relatives. Meat of Himalayan Goat and Buffaloes are consumed throughtout the festival. I will eat a lot of meat and delicious food in during feast. I will help my mother in daily chores and prepare meals for the guests. On the 10th day of Dashain, Bijaya Dashami, i will receive tika and jamara from my parents and will also get money along with the blessings. This time I’m planning to visit my Maternal Uncle and spend good time in village with his family.
Tihar starts after 2 weeks of Dashain. It is the festival of light. All the houses and streets look beautiful with colourful lights.
I will also go shopping with my parents and help them decorate the house with candles, colourful lights and make Rangoli ( Rangoli is an art form, originating in the Indian subcontinent, in which patterns are created on the floor or the ground using materials such as colored rice, dry flour or colored sand). During Tihar, Sisters put tika of seven colours on the forehead of their brothers and give them presents. Brothers also gives some money or gifts to their sisters. I will also play Deusi-Bhailo ( Bhailo and Deusi are the traditional songs that are sung during the festival of light Dipawali and also called “Tihar”. Children and teenagers sing the songs and dance as they go to various homes in their community, collecting money, sweets, food and giving blessings for prosperity).
Many other plans will come along as the time will pass during vacation and I’ll try to make this vacation a memorable one and spend quality time with my family and friends.
